Hanif Home — residential lighting design in Bangalore, India by Larkish

    Overview

The best landscape lighting does not illuminate the garden. It reveals the architecture within it. Hanif Home is a contemporary modern residence in Bangalore embraced by a richly layered landscape. The lighting scope focused exclusively on the façade and landscape, with the intention of guiding residents seamlessly through the property while preserving visual comfort and tranquillity. The architecture's clean lines and confident proportions demanded a lighting response that reinforces rather than competes. The central challenge was creating a cohesive nocturnal experience across diverse landscape conditions, hardscape, vegetation, and vertical architecture, while maintaining the sense of calm that defines the residence's character. Every intervention had to feel measured and purposeful.

    Design Approach

The design operates on the principle that landscape and architecture share a single luminous identity after dark, bound by warmth, restraint, and spatial clarity.

Hardscape lighting accentuates material textures and crafted surfaces with precision. Low-mounted and recessed elements graze stone paving, retaining walls, and built edges at oblique angles, revealing grain and depth that daylight often conceals. The effect is one of quiet sophistication, surfaces that communicate quality through controlled illumination rather than brightness.

Vegetation lighting introduces a gentle interplay of light and shadow, creating depth and atmosphere throughout the planted environment. Ground-level uplighting beneath specimen trees and dense planting generates botanical silhouettes against walls and boundary structures, a dynamic layer that shifts with breeze and season.

The façade lighting subtly reinforces the verticality of the architecture, allowing the structure to stand with quiet confidence after dusk. Warm washes define the building's primary planes and recesses without over-illuminating, ensuring that the residence reads as a composed presence within its landscape rather than a lit object.

Colour temperature is maintained within a cohesive warm register across all zones, creating chromatic unity between hardscape, planting, and built form. The nocturnal result is a residence that feels grounded, considered, and at ease, its landscape and architecture rendered as one continuous experience.
